I was getting very frustrated trying to install fonts in Mac OS X. It seemed simple enough. Drop the font or fonts into one of the /Library/Fonts folders and viola. However, I kept dropping fonts, relaunching the app, and NOTHING. I even restarted, again, nothing.
Finally, I got a couple fonts to work, but there seemed to be no reason why some did, and others did not. But after trying a bunch of fonts, I began to notice a trend. While the system saw both sets of fonts as the same kind of file, the ones that did not work had the extension ".ttf" and the ones that worked had nothing. Since OS X uses extensions, but hides them from the user, it occurred to me that there might be some issue with double extension. Sure enough, if I removed the ".ttf" the fonts worked fine.
I can only assume that there will be a problem with any visible extension.
I hope this helps everyone.
