Mac OS X Snow Leopard font problems

Hello!

I have just made a software update and am running Mac OS X version 10.6.4.

After my update, the font in many programs like Safari and the PDFs in Preview has changed to a weird font that 1) is useless and hard to read and 2) does not support danish letters. The result is that danish letters are either disappearing or using the normal font.

This was never a problem before updating, so obviously I am rather frustrated. I have gone into the various preferences in both Safari and OS X and sought to change the font. I have also tried TinkerTool, but nothing seems to work.

Have you had any experiences with this?

As I can't upload images to this service, I am not able to show you how it looks, so if you send me an email, I will be able to reply with a screenshot.

Thank you so much in advance!

Best,

How many user installed fonts do you have prensent on that Mac? None? Hundreds? Thousands?

If there are any, disable them all in Font Book or whatever font management software you use. Unless Font Book or the other possible software can identify you what is the bad font.

Log out of your user, log back in, test with Safari or other programs and see if the issue is solved. If it is, enable 50 % of the fonts you disabled above, log out, log back in, test again. If it now would happen again, disable 50 % of what you added, rinse and repeat until the problematic fonts are gone. You will need to log out and back in after each change in Font Book (or other software) for changes to take effect.
Sure, if there are thousands of fonts, that will take some time, but a) in the case of a bad font it solves it and b) you'll get rid of the bad fonts causing it.
