Ok here is whats up..

I have Apple file sharing and windows file sharing on with my Mac OS X (Tiger). Yet whenever I try to log into it with an existing username/password I continue to get prompted to for a U/P and no matter how many times I do it it keeps asking. Where can I find information about how to setup my mac to share properly with Ubuntu (Linux). I tried doing a search but didn't find anything useful. Mostly printing answers

Next question: I setup a folder to be shared in ubuntu using SMB but whenever I tried to get into to it via Mac OS X (Tiger) my system just hangs.. How can I setup Ubuntu to share nicely with OS X. Thanks guys..

I'm having the same problem.

I set up windows sharing in Ubuntu and i can browse files on the G4 iMac from the Ubuntu box (it's a 233 Bondi iMac G3) but Samba won't tango with Ubuntu from the G4.

I can't remember exactly what i did to enable network access from Ubuntu but i remember it prompted me to download and install software for SMB (Samba) and NFS.

If you're using Samba on Ubuntu, you have to configure the smb.conf located in /etc. Mind you, Ubuntu might not have the option to run as a server, but it's possible to configure it as such. And Ubuntu might even have a Gnome tool in Administration that will allow you to configure Samba to serve out shares to other SMB clients.

As far as not having to enter the password everytime you're accessing a share, I believe if you use smbpasswd and create the passwords for each account that's resident on each computer, you won't be prompted for it since Samba will look in its smbpasswd config file for the appropriate user's password. Of course, you will probably have to make the passwords consistent between the same local account that is resident on both computers. If the regular login password and smbpasswd password on both computers are the same for the same login account name, then it shouldn't prompt you for the password.

I hope this made sense. :o

Well I'm using darwinports to put Samba3 on my OS x machine so hopefully that can clear it up if I can somehow configure it and run. I know where to configure but not run it. It was 4 am and I was dizzy with sleep. :P As for Ubuntu I'll play with it some more.
