Mac OSX 10.4.11 freezing at random times

Hello!
I was wondering if someone could help me with a "freezing" issue I seem to be having withy my Mac G5 running OSX 10.4.11. This is a business computer for a small design shop, so we don't have an IT person to help out.

Over the past few months, I have had problems with my computer either freezing an application or freezing everything completely, to the point of having to do a hard shutdown. In the past, I have had no problems running Photoshop, Illustrator, my e-mail application, the internet and iTunes all at the same time. As of late, however, it seems that if I open more than one or two applications at a single time, the computer completely seizes and will not respond. Occasionally, it will go to a black screen, but not reboot. More commonly, the "spinning disc" icon appears as thought it's "thinking" about something but never resolves itself. I've even left for lunch and come back to it still frozen.

The majority of the time, it occurs when I am re-opening a file that I have minimized in my toolbar. Other times, it's when trying to open a webpage or when saving a file from an open program. Occasionally, but not often, it'll freeze right in the middle of me typing an e-mail or selecting a tool in one of my design programs.

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue. Is there firmware I need to install? Is this some sort of virus? Is there a way to adjust the usable memory for applications? Do I need to delete files on my hard drive to make more space for something? I'm out of answers.

If you could find the time to help me out, it would not only be greatly appreciated, it would make my work day much easier.

Thanx in advance for any help you can provide!

More specs besides G5 would be helpful, iMac G5, PowerMac G5, etc..First thing you want to do is find an install disk to boot to holding the C key or by holding the option key to enter boot manager. Once booted to the DVD go to utilities/disk utility and repair the disk to see what kind of errors it generates if any. Other than that more info will be needed regarding the specs of the machine.
