mac osx application updates issue

hello volunteers, if you can help me out on this one i'd appreciate it greatly. this is probably an issue that's come up before.
the last couple of updates for os10.1.1 and 10.1.2 have included application updates as well. but since i had moved the applications from the original locations, they did not get updated. a new folder was created in the original application location.
how do i update the application now? is there any way? can i just copy the files into the original application?

Yes, you can simply replace the application with a new version. In most cases, this will not effect your settings and preferences, unless the application author has been naughty and put them in with the application folder and not in your personal Library/Preferences
