In order to do a partition and format they'll first have to get a readable install CD-DVD.
My question to the OP is are you using the install disc that came with this computer.
In most cases these install discs are machine specific, so you'll need the original or at least a disc from an exact same model computer.
A retail purchased install disc, as long as it supports your hardware should also work.
Whatever the case, when you power up with the install disc inserted, try holding down the 'C' key during the boot process.
