What happens if you use an OS X disc that came with a Mac to put on another Mac?

It won't work! If, for some chance, it is the same model of Mac, it would be illegal.

Just buy a retail (legal) version of OSX (after checking requirements).

Yep. It will not install, and it's not legal.
If you need to install it on more Macs, get a retail version of Mac OS X - single or family packs depending on your use.
