Mac OSX9 and HP 3600 Printer

Our school has both Mac OSX 9.2.2 and Mac 10.3.4 computers. We have just purchased an HP Color LaserJet 3600n printer. It will work with the OSX10 system, but is there a way to make the OSX 9 computers print to it, as it does not evidently support Appletalk. I have tried the Apple Desktop Printer Utility, supplied an IP address through LPR printing, but the printer just prints letters and numbers. I have tried different Apple laserjet drivers and different HP drivers, as a OSX 9 driver does not seem to be available. Is there a way for our OSX9 computers to access this printer?
Thank you.

This a PCL (not postscipt) printer, so you need a way to translate the postscript.

You can make one of the OS X computers a server. Use the Apple Desktop Printer Utility to set up an LPD printer, using the IP address plus queue name for the printer. For PPD/model, use Apple Color Laserwriter. With this setup, you are sending postscript from OS 9 to the OS X computer, where it is translated and output to the printer.

(To get the queue name on an OS X computer, highlight the printer in Printer Setup and click Show Info.)
