mac/pc network, what's next?

I am trying to get my computers networked and seeing each other.

This is what I have:
5-port Linksys ethernet hub
iMac w/ OS X v10.2.8 (hub port 2)
Dell w/ Windows 98 (hub port 1) -has broken token ring pci driver??
Cable Modem (hooked to uplink port on hub)
USB Printer connected to the iMac

So far I have everything but the printer hooked up. The iMac happily took the cable modem connection so the network hardware must be working. However, I can't ping the Dell from the iMac, or ping the iMac from the Dell. I've tried several tutorials on seting up network file sharing, setting up the internal software, even disconecting the cable modem incase there's a conflict, but even when I do, each computer only sees itself on the LAN. Since my iMac also likes to take the cable modem when it's there, I'm concluding that it's the PC that's broken or not set up right. So, what should I do?

what port is shared with the uplink port?

Usually port 1 and uplink are the same, you can only use one or the other.

Is either computer running a DHCP server? if not the dell is probably not getting an ip and has some random 169.something.

Further more do you plan to access the internet with both computers? Unless you get more than one IP from you ISP its not going to work the way you have set up. If your mac is getting online then it has an IP from your ISP where as your PC would have whatever ip its giving its self, they would not be able to see eachother on the network thru network places because it only browses for the subnet that you are on because each has a different network address they wont see eachother.

If you manually typed in the ip address when trying to connect to your mac it might work go start > run > enter "\\macs ip addres" I still havent figured out how to connect to a windows share from a mac using only the ip address.

with your iMac, under System Preferences and Network, do you have IP addresses showing in your TCP/IP tab? Is it Using DHCP? Are there numbers under the IP address, subnet mask and router fields?

with your PC, go to Start and Run, type in "winipcfg". Does it give you a window with your ethernet card and numbers for IP address, subnet mask and router fields?

You might have to log into the router to get it to spread the love correctly. Here, I have to log in to the router every time it gets reset (sometimes, it just needs to be done) and set it to use a PPPoE connection. You might need to do the same, depending on your setup.

How do I log into the router, you ask? Well, read the instruction manual. It will give you an IP address to use, and the default password is probably admin.

The uplink port is shared with port 5 on the hub.

I don't think either one of the computers is running a DHCP server. Though I use DHCP to connect to the cable modem, if that affects anything.

While I'd like to access the net from both computers, I'm not sure if that's possible for the cable modem since the service is designed for one computer. More likely I'd have to route the connection through one of the computers having one act as the local server.

The only thing I have done so far to test the network is to ping each computer's IP address. Though it failed.

I don't have the network ip prefrences in front of me right now. I disconnected the network so I could send some mail from my Dell. The PC won't take the connection if it's on the network. I'll have to do this again later.

I don't know what happened but while the mac was waiting at startup to start the network, the PC stole the internet connection for the first time.

Okay I just checked. at this point the mac gets the random 169.something and a subnet mask address 255.255.x*(looks random) but no router. On the other hand now the PC has an IP, subnet address, and default gateway assigned.

At this point I'm not sure how I can get them to see each other on the network since one computer goes IP random and the other runs away with the internet connection.

You should either buy a cable router or a second nic for your dell. If you have windows 98 SE or higher it comes with internet connection sharing and is really easy to setup.

If you just want to be able to share files right now and not use the internet i suggest manualy entering the IPs for both computers and disconnecting the cable mode. Give your mac 192.168.0.2 and ur pc 192.168.0.3

Do yourself a favor, get a Router and use that instead of the Hub. Makes things a lot easier. It's almost automatic when you connect the modem, router and machines.
