Mac & Picasa

I've been using Picasa on my mac for over a year with great success. Long story short, it appears the latest Picasa update 3.6.7 is dependent upon the Georgia font family being installed in order to operate. Any attempts I've made with respect to install the fonts (and I need all four Georgia Italic, Georgia Bold Italic, Georgia Regular and Georgia Bold) fails. I have found where I can purchase these at $75.00 but... before making that purchase, isn't this a font that I already have? I have searched my font folders and don't see it. I suspect I'm missing something. I truly don't know and will be the first to admit that I'm NOT all that technical (smile).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Georgia is a system font, at least in and since 10.5.

Open Font Book application (or whatever you use for font management), and search for it in 'all fonts'. Is it there? (It should be).

Georgia is not a System font. System fonts are stored in /System/Library/Fonts. Georgia is a Microsoft font that appears to have been adopted as part of Apple's default bundle of fonts for MacOS X. Like other non-System global fonts, Georgia is stored in /Library/Fonts.

Thanks, Mr. Me. I checked in Library/fonts and do not find it there. Evidently, Picasa is dependent upon this font being present. Given that it's not in my library/fonts, do I need to make the purchase and place it there?

Well, Georgia is installed by Mac OS X, and not by any Microsoft software. I don't have any Microsoft software on the Mac OS X side of the Mac (and have never had on this personal one) so the chances of the font having been installed by a Microsoft product are between zero and nil.

However, I do see it listed as part of the M$ font package in http://web.nickshanks.com/fonts/microsoft-core-web-fonts
so you could grab that font from the link above.

You are conflating two different issues. That Apple bundled Georgia with your OS is not in dispute. This makes it a default font, not a System font. System fonts are housed in the Fonts folder inside the System folder. They cannot be altered lest you damage your OS. The Font Book menu selection to remove System fonts is grayed-out. OTOH, default fonts like Georgia can be removed without damaging your OS. The Font Book menu selection to remove fonts like Georgia is enabled.

BTW, whether deliberately or by accident, there are some hinky links on the site that you linked to.
