.Mac Replacement Challenge

I saw this story at MacCentral about a guy starting a contest to replace .Mac (particularly in the syncing aspects) (Direct Link Here). I thought this looked interesting, since $99 a year is expensive.

Since I'm not much of a programmer, do you think this thing will spark interest and/or get complete?
 
I don't know how far this will really go. I often hear the argument that most of the things that are included in .Mac you can get for free. And that's true, you can get free email, free webhosting, etc. Maybe I am nuts, but I have never really had an issue paying for .Mac. It works, and it works well for what I need, and $8.25 a month, seems ok to me. (living in NY that equates to one beer at the bar).
 
Yup, it works well. I'd imagine quite a few people just like having the @mac.com part in their e-mail address too.
