Mac won't sleep

I have a PowerMac G4 running Mac OSX 10.4.11 with a 17" Apple Studio Display along with the native ATI Radeon 7500 video card that came with the Mac from Apple.

The Mac will try to sleep, but it wakes up right after it tries going into sleep mode.

However, there are two things that will allow the Mac to go into sleep mode:

1. If I start up in safe mode (holding the shift key during boot up), the Mac will go into sleep mode and stay in sleep mode.

2. If I disconnect the 17" Apple Studio Display, it will go into sleep mode.

If I connect a different display to the VGA port on the video card, and with the Apple Studio Display disconnected, it will also sleep.

This is a bit of a puzzle. I took the Mac to the Genius Bar at a local Apple store, and they didn't have any good suggestions. It sounds like it could be a combination of hardware and software issues.

One other point - the USB connection on the Apple Studio Display doesn't work, so I am not able to connect a mouse/keyboard to the display, and instead have to connect directly to the USB port on the back of the PowerMac G4.
