MACBOOK Display calibration

Is it just me? I just purchased a new MACBOOK. Two days old. One of the reasons for the purchase (aside from what appears to be a short in the old 2002 iBOOK) is the display. The old iBOOK was starting to get fuzzy, colors weird, strange contrast.

So, I get the new MACBOOK and I'm moving the display around, trying to get contrast (all it does it make things greyer. Not contrast at all). So, I open of the display and decide to calibrate (I'm familar with the process. This is my fourth mac).

I found that the left slider has to be all the way to the bottom - as far as it can go- to come even CLOSE to following the instruction i.e. "Move the left slider until the brightness of the gray shape in the middle matches the background as much as possible." All the way off the bottom.

Is this normal for a new MACBOOK? Once I played around with it I was able to get "sort of" a decent screen and some contrast with the control (now, a little bit of contrast with "gray"). But, c'mon....I shouldn't have to be screwing around with this on a new machine, should I?

Am I going to have to call them? And ship it back so they can get this right?
