Macbook Pro & Cybershot

Hi there,

I just bought a 13" 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro yesterday and upon installing programs for it, I found out that it doesn't support Sony Cybershot DSC-T900. I still have the installation CD, it CAN be opened but the files CANNOT be read. It seems that all the files are not compatible because the laptop cannot present any recommended program that can open the files in the CD.

Is there any solution/mediating software available so that I could use PMB software of Sony, Pictbridge, etc. and not just connect the camera via USB? I find it tedious and it would be a pity if i will not be able to utilize the PMB software.

Btw, I'm from the Philippines.

Hoping for your reply. Thank you very much!

MacOS X does not support any digital cameras. MacOS X supports FireWire and USB. If the camera manufacturer supports the features of USB such as USB Automount, then your camera will have no problem with iPhoto or Image Capture. If it does not, then it is incumbent upon the manufacturer to include software support with the camera. This software may also be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. I know nothing about Sony digital cameras in this regard. The most notable manufacturer that does not support USB Automount is Canon. However, Canon includes MacOS X software with its cameras.

According to the manual for your camera, it is explicitly supported under MacOS 9.1 through MacOS X 10.5. The site has no Mac software to download. Without access to this model, my guess is that Sony supports standard USB. If this is the case, then your problems are caused by not having properly setup your Mac to launch iPhoto when you connect your camera.

Thank you very much for your reply. I can actually connect the camera via USB and iPhoto fortunately is able to read it. I just was not aware that Mac doesn't support Sony software. But I guess I can just do away with transferring the pics manually via USB. Thanks again!

My Sony works with iPhoto with no intervention by me. I plugged the camera in and everything opened automatically. The CD is still in the packet!

After one OSX upgrade I had to get the camera software updated, but it's fine since.

You should be aware that there's an Apple application "Image Capture" that acts as an intermediary between the camera and iPhoto. IC is the app that recognises that a camera is connected and automatically opens iPhoto. IC stays "hidden" during all this, but you can open it and tweak the Prefs, if necessary.

I am happy that your camera is working properly. FWIW, there is no need for user-installable software with a digital camera. This Mac user does not want the manufacturer's stinkin' software on his computer. There are $5.00 keychain cameras that work perfectly fine on Mac or Windows out-of-the-box with no user-installable software. [Did you hear that, Canon?]

The beauty of USB Automount is that it gives the user a lot of options. For Mac users, you have the option of using iPhoto, Image Capture, or the Finder to grab your pictures from the camera. You may even use your camera's memory card as a storage device of your files.

Thank you very much for taking time to reply to my post. Just a follow up question.. How were you able to have your camera software updated? Did you go to the manufacturing company of your camera? Sorry, but I am no techie. Pardon the ignorance. :)

I also have a Canon camera but I rarely use it now. Good thing Sony still works on Mac. I have yet to explore the full capability of Mac since I am a recent convert. :) Thank you!
