MacBook Pro dying before boot sound

Hi, I own a MBP 17", Early 2008.

My MBP has stopped booting entirely. When I press the power button, it sounds like it's powering on, and then powers off again. The screen doesn't light up, nor is there a startup sound.
I've tried resetting the PRAM and holding the button down for five seconds while unplugged, no dice.

I've also checked the RAM. Currently, there are 2 2GB sticks in it, and originally, there were two 1GB sticks, so naturally, that's where I assumed the problem would be. However, I no longer have the two 1GB sticks, so the only thing I've been able to discern is that either neither of them work, or both of them do.

Earlier today, it booted. System Profiler only recognised one or the 2GB sticks (I realised later that that was not seated properly). However, after I put it to sleep, it would no longer wake and afterwards, it would no longer boot as before. I have secure virtual memory switched on in the security pref pane (I'm not sure that's relevant, but hey, I'm going the whole hog here).

I'm currently doing a programming course in college, so I kind of rely on my computer heavily. It's out of warranty, also. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Carl.
