If I'm working on my macbook pro on top of my lap it gets pretty hot! This might seem like a stupid quesion seeing as laptops are not usually upgradable but is there an after market cooling system that I can get for it?

To expound, you cannot (should not) replace internal cooling implements. That would be stupid. You can, however, buy a cooling pad or stand that will displace heat at a better rate than letting the thing cook on your legs or the like.

Its also worth keeping in mind that computer manufacturers stopped using the term "laptop" several years back, switching to "notebook" instead, and this was for a good reason. It's not a good idea to have one in your lap on an ongoing basis. Not if you plan on having kids, anyway. ;-)
Also there are a few software solutions to your hot lap problem. Doing a quick versiontracker search you can find SMCFan Control. This app allows you to increase the max speed of your internal fans. I have been using it for a 6-8 weeks and it is great, the only trad off is increased power consumption. Even with the RPM of the fans set at nearly 5000 they are completely silent. This is a FREE solution to this problem, which means no shipping to Canadia issues.
