Macbook Pro Start up issues

I have a Macbook Pro running OSX.4.11 that has been flawless for the last three years until last evening. The MBP will start-up, the screen is a light grey, the apple icon comes up, the gear at the bottom is spinning, and spinning, and spinning, and then the screen goes to a light blue and fades, it sits there, then the login screen comes up, I login and then it just continues to sit there. I have tried soft re-boots, resetting PRAM, and all the usual steps that I can find. If anyone could assist with their expertise, I would appriecate it.

Thanks!

Try to safe boot by holding down the shift key until you reach a login screen. If it lets you log in, see if you can restart normally after that.

Hi. I'm currently using my Droid X to find much needed help with my MacBook Pro OS (snow leopard's newest version). Last night I backed up all my files using an external hard drive. My files are safe...thankfully! This was done so I could do a factory reinstall with the MacBook Pro Install DVD. I put the DVD in and reinstalled OS X. However, this only reinstalled OS X, keeping all of my files. I tried again, same thing happened. Now when I start up my computer the normal log on screen comes up, but my account name is gone (I typed it in) and put my password in. For reasons I cannot understand, my password will not be accepted. I tried several times, making sure I was typing the correct password. Same issue each time! I've no idea how to bypass this to get into my computer. I'm completely stuck and really need assistance.

Please reply at your very earliest (if you know or have suggestions to how this issue could be resolved.

Thanks very much =)
