Hi Mac advisers - hope you can help with a strategy for this disaster. I got a system message saying Hard DISK was almost full and I used 'Monolingual' to remove extra language files - was careful to leave English and American English - but somehow it deleted my entire Utilities FOLDER from my Applications. it has definitely gone - and lots of capabilities have gone too.
I have searched with Spotlight and I have full admin permissions etc. it is dead and gone. Many things don't seem to work anymore:
I cannot call up System Preferences.
I cannot activate a Disk Image - installer.app has vanished
Safari vanished though I have a 'residual'cut down version.
I can still send email and can browse the web in a basic way -
I tried downloading a new version of Safari and also Camino and Opera - but I cannot 'activate' the disk images - it will not install any new programmes.
Reading the Forum it seems I should reinstall the OS using the original disks that came with the mac. Unfortunately I am travelling in Sri Lanka and my disks are back in the UK, locked in my desk.
Would deeply appreciate any on how to go about getting replacement disks? There is no Mac Shop in Sri lanka though I have asked every tourist with a Mac if they have their disks with them - bit of a long shot.
I can probably get someone in the UK to buy me some new disks - or purchase via Ebay - but that will take a week or more. Just wondered if there is some way of getting a versions of Apple's 'Installer.app' from off the web. Haven't found one so far.
No idea why Monolingual destroyed my Utilities Folder - I received a warning message when emptying the Trash saying that it could not delete Safari as it was in use. I stopped the process and found my entire Applications Folder was in the trash - and it was working its way through the list from Z to A. it stopped - thank god - when it reached 'S" for Safari - but the Utilities Folder was already deleted. nightmare.
Most programmes still working - Pages, iPhoto, Mail etc, but can't browse the web easily and can't do any disk utility tasks.
