Hello MacOSX associate,

I noticed browsing online that the MacMini with Core2Duo processor can be upgraded to 3 GB of RAM. One 2 GB chip with one 1 GB chip. Apple does not offer this upgrade and only offers an upgrade to 2 GB. What is the deal here? I am intending to purchase a MacMini in October and was considering a 2 GB unit but when 3 GB is possible I would prefer to buy the 1 GB version initially and than later on go to 3 GB. Why does Apple not offer this option? Or are there downsides to going to 3 GB?

Thanks.

As a rule of thumb, you want to order your machine from Apple with stock RAM and buy more 3rd party. It's cheaper that way.

I'm guessing Apple doesn't (or didn't) include this option because there aren't enough people needing that configuration to justify the time to assemble machines with 3GB of RAM.

If you're putting 3 GB of RAM into a Mini, you may be better off with an iMac. The iMac is more performance-oriented than the mini, which is basically a laptop in a box. The kit costs $140 from OWC.
