MacOs X doesn't shut down

Hi,
after some operations made to try to repair a corrupted WinXp installation through bootCamp, now my MacOs works and starts, but doesn't shut down when I give the command "shut down". The dock and the command line disappear, and I can see the arrow and the desktop image for an hour, but nothing happens, and the system does not shut down. I have to keep the button pushed until the computer switches off. How can I repair this behaviour>
I have a MacBook, 2,16 Ghz, 2Gb Ram, 160GB HD, with a MacOs X Tiger.
Thanks.

Try starting in "Safe Mode" by holding shift on bootup. This will repair the disk, and not load any extensions. If you can shut down in safe mode, an extension is the problem, and we can troubleshoot from there.

shutdown -h now is a more "graceful" way of shutdown verses just holding down the power button.

The -h part corresponds to "halt" - i.e. the OS attempts to stop all running programs prior to
shutting off the computer.

Have you tried the obvious ones: Resetting, NVRAM and PRAM?
Also at work we have a 24" iMac (I dont trust the new intel's, They seem a tad temperamental) and that will do your excct same thing ust at bootup and this is fixed with safe boot.

Good luck
Charlie

Resetting (aka "Zapping") the PRAM:
When you turn on your Mac and hear the startup chime, hold down Command-Option-P-R (the Command key is the one with the cloverleaf symbol on it) and keep it held down for about 3 chimes, then let go.
