MacOSX Server v10.4.3 Services won't Start

Sometimes, the services in Server Admin refuse to Start. It is unexplainable by me and I can't find a solution other than reinstalling the whole system again. Some of the services include DNS, NAT, VPN and most recently Software Updates. Is there something, other than reinstalling the entire system, I can do to get these services running again?

The recent problem (Software Updates) had in it's log something about updating the index while downloading updates, which I did and probably caused the problem. The other things like VPN and NAT, I didn't check the log. I remember VPN's refusal to start up had to do with me entering a user IP address in there. It still refused to start even after I removed the IP address.
I have reinstalled the software and am very very careful with it. I have learned I can't just try things to try to learn the software. I really have to be careful when modifying things and learn every thing about what I am modifying before I mess with it.

The best way to learn is to run the server platform in a non-mission-critical environment.

The software update service may appear to be crashing and may actually log some crashes, but it might be the service attempting to download all of the applicable updates that its attempting to mirror. I've seen that behavior in the wild before. The service didn't do a very good job on informing me of what exactly it was doing in the background. :)

The VPN service itself will need a range of valid IP addresses that it can distribute to your VPN clients.
