Mail app freezes upon starting

As of Sep 1, hotmail http protocol is no longer available. I followed the instructions creating a new pop3 account for hotmail in Mail app. and it imported my entire inbox in it. Then, it crashed and upon restart it erased the old hotmail account. My other existing pop accounts are still there but the whole application keeps freezing upon opening, like it's constantly downloading from the server when you hit "get mail". What did I do wrong? I have Mac OS X 10.4 and Mail 2.3.1
