I am having crashes when mail goes to "junk" have tried everything but no luck so far.

My question is: how do I install (reinstall) JUST the mail app?
I really don't want to do a whole system install.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Have you repaired the permissions? Go to (user) / Applications / Utilities, open Disk Utility. Choose your drive, run "repair disk permissions" a few times untill it comes out clear.

Remove from ~ / Library / Preferences a file called com.apple.mail.plist.

Restart mail.app, and tell if it still occurs.

If those fail, reboot the mac, hold "apple" and "S" keys after startup chime. It will start in single-user mode (black, white text). type /sbin/fsck -y or as teh screen instructs to, if you are in 10.2.x, or /sbin/fsck -fy if you are in 10.3.x.

If it still panics, .. let us know. (Time for me to get some sleep)

Thanks Giaguara,

Yes I have done all the regular things and also:

I ran TechTool Pro with current update.
I ran Disk Warrior.
I removed the pref file a couple times.
I repiared Permissions more than I can count.
I emtied cache.
I checked for Virus with Norton, Virex and Intego.
I have submitted ump-teen Bug reports to Apple (no response).

As an interesting side note:
I have a couple other users set up. One for my wife, but she still always uses mine, and one called Beta, for testing new software and stuff I don't want messing up my account if it goes south. But, the point is — If I log in to my wifes user acct --- Mail works fine on her space with NO crashes. I can move mail to junk and the program can do it when mail comes in and mail does not crash.
I also tried removing the prefs and the mail.app and replacing it with a copy from my computer upstairs , via LAN. No go.

BTW: When all this "started", it was after the last security update from apple, the first sign that something was wrong... was when I had 152 messages in the "junk" and when I went to look them over for valid emails, like I always do before deleting the bunch wholesale, there appeared nothing in the "junk" window --- although it still indcated there were 152 messages there. So, of course since I had no hope of ever seeing them, I deleted them. The next time I checked the mail it was the same. Shortly thereafter, it started crashing while checking mail - apparently when it tried to filter mail TO the Junk mailbox.
Subsequently I have gone back to Eudora, which has been rock steady, but I must admitt, I miss the Apple mail.app. In the past I had ONLY used Eudora and it was hard for me to switch. But, I have gotten used to mail.app and now it is hard switching back. Besides setting up all those mailboxes and tweaking the filters, which still don't work all the time - I am constantly removing mail that should have been filtered to a valid mailbox fromt the "JUNK". Oh, well... enough of my diatribe...

I will now take your advice and start in Single User Mode and see if the "FixDisk" command does any good. :) I hope it will... I wil let you know.

O.K. "root volume appears to be o.k."

Mail Still Crashes when msg is tranferred to "Junk" :-( so sad.

Try as a different user (if you haven't got one, create one using sysprefs...).

OR

Try taking all the mailboxes out of the Library folder of your user, if you don't want to create another user.

Try disabling the junk filtering, then click it on after a minute (to training).

Yes, I have tried that too.
But after a while... I don't want hundreds of junk mail in my IN box so I turn it off. It, of course asks do I really want to send all the junk to the Junk mailbox? I, of course, say YES. and then it crashes.

So, is there a way to re-install the app totally?
So that it writes over the old one or un-installs the old one...etc. etc.
I don't care at this point if I lose all the old mail. I have already read it after all. And have been using Eudora for a couple of weeks now, while trying to sort out these problems.

BTW: like I said before... if I turn the JUNK mail filter OFF it works fine.
Also, I may not have said, if I put it in training... it works fine. When I turn on junk mail filtering and either me or the program tries to transfer a msg to the JUNK mailbox... the app crashes.

Obviously there is some problem with the way this app is working in MY user account. I don't want to create any more users... I don't want to reformat the HD, I don't want to do a "Clean Install", I don't even want to reinstall the whole damn system.. I just want to fix the mail.app.

Thanks for all the suggestions...but so far nothing has worked.
But, I am still holding out hope.... :(
