Mail - Fetching new mail

This is the third time I've had this problem. After an interruption in internet connection, the email for my Mail program hangs up on fetching 12 of xx, but always on 12.
When this happens I can't quit out of Mail and have to use Force quit. I've tried letting it run for a whole day but it makes no progress.
I've tried deleting the number 12 email from the server with no luck.
How can I solve this please?

This may work--open your mail and go to prefs>accts. copy all of your settings; I.e.>incoming;outgoing settings etc. Then go to your hd.>usrs>PREFERENCES>TRASH the mail.plist. restart; then open applications and click on MAIL APP. You will have to set up a whole new mail program. [ not hard } re enter your settings etc. and you should get a new mail program. Tis may cure the problem. good luck!

I had a similar problem, but I couldn't connect it to a specific event like interruption. I tried advice like Dickster's, but the problem persisted. Folks speculated that some cache had to be emptied, but I never learned which and where and how.

I solved the problem by switching that one account to Thunderbird.

Dear Dickster,
Thanks very much for your reply. In the end it turned out there were too many messages in the server and my Mac Mail apparently was getting stuck on it. I deleted old messages and reset the information in the server and it seems to have cleared up. However, I'm keeping your recommendation in case I have further troubles.
Thanks ever so much,
Diane
