Mail gone evil

For some reason my copy of mail has stopped working. I noticed my machine was slowing down and going weird but I was just running out of disk space. I deleted some stuff and I've got now 5.5GB free on my startup disk now but Mail was still slowing up and generally making my system run like a dog. Now it won't even start up; the icon will bounce for a while in the dock but not open the app, although according to the force quite window it is open. Then any other apps including the Finder grind to a halt and I have to restart.

Any suggestions? Could running out of space have affected the prefs or permissions? System specs are in sugnature.

Try deleting com.apple.mail.plist from, users/yourusername/library/preferences/

That will take take of any Mail wonkiness 99% of the time. If not, try repairing permissions.
