mail not allowing outbound mail

Using 10.6.8 on Imac
Mail version 4.5 (1084)
Mail crashed and I retreived my data from time machine. The mailboxes for my accounts had to be rebuilt and this was done. Incoming mail appears to work fine but outgoing mail does not go. It pops up with cannot send message and shows smtp list. Using the connection doctor it gives all green lights but still does not allow outbound mail.
I tried to delete a mailbox it would not delete to rebuild it.
Any suggestions?

Outgoing messages are usually sent through an SMTP server. Having absolutely no information about your email account, I will assume that you do not have the proper SMTP server settings for your connection.

Bits of wisdom:
  • Make sure that you have chosen an SMTP server.
  • Your SMTP server does not have to match your incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server. A single SMTP server may be used with any or all of your email accounts.
  • Many ISPs do not allow access to SMTP servers on outside domains. This restriction, however, is usually limited to unsecured SMTP access on Port 25. Try secured SMTP access on Port 587.
  • If you have an IMAP account, then your outgoing mail server may be the same as your incoming mail server which is your IMAP server.
