Mail Server & Tiger

Hello,

does anyone know an easy to set up and WORKING mail system for Tiger?
I am using IpSwitch Imail, on my Win Servers, and I would really like to find something similar (complete and easy user interface, reliable) for TIGER.

I tried to set up the mail server using Tiger built-in mail services, but they are pretty "crappy", not easy to set up (as a matter of fact I am still struggling with it) and so far... not working. I also have to say that my experience is limited on MAC servers.

As an alternative (I didn't see any decent system like Imail for MAC and probably I will not find one)... is there some MAC server Tiger expert in the NJ/NEWARK area that could help me with the set up?

Thank you

I haven't had much trouble with Tiger mail, but, of course, YMMV.

There are lots of alternatives, depending on price and need. Things like Zimbra, Open X-change, Kerio, Communigate, etc.

I used to live in NJ, that count? :)

We find that Kerio is a fantastic value for our Enterprise customers, and that those willing to take the time to tackle learning how to administer OS X Server Mail will find it's not so bad. Besides, it's possible the problems are either router or DNS related, which wouldn't go away if you switched mail server programs.....

Have you used server admin to activate TIGER mail. It should be running in a fwe minutes (importing mail requires some additional tinkeling).

What does not work when activating the mail server in TIGER. Is it not found, no users seen etc.

Kees

I'm using the built in services in Tiger Server 10.4.3 on my Xserve.
It,s fantastic. I downloaded the Demo of Kerio and it looked excellent but stuck with Tiger because it's there already. took me a day or to to configure it (including Squirrelmail Webmail) and I'm very happy with the results.
Sadly I'm not in NJ...I'm In the UK

Yeah, I haven't had much trouble running a live Tiger Mail server or Panther before it. I think the only downtime I had on either platform was due to network or power outtage. :)

The UK...hmmm...is that in South Jersey? ;)

Thank you guys, I wish it was running in a few minutes. I was using the server admin/mail to do the set up.
I am not sure, but I think that there are some user/right issues.
For example setting up Imap For example when I try to use in IMAP reconstruct -i
at the end I get the error:
couldn't open partition: /var/spool/imap/user

and if I check there... the partition does not exist. do I have to create it? Isn't it supposed to create itself?

Also I read about the new "intelligent permission system" that doesn't allow inheriting of permissions in subfolders but sometimes I cannot create folders even as a admin user on the drives... Is it supposed to be like this or it's my server that behaves strangely? It was an installation "out of the box" from Apple. Maybe I should just zero erase the drives and re-install the system software?

I am posting also the postconfig file:

I have some information for you:

See document 107996 on the Apple site “www.apple.com/support”.

A script made byu myself to transfer mail between systems:

mv /var/imap /var/imap.old mkdir /var/imap
/usr/bin/cyrus/tools/mkimap
chown -R cyrusimap:mail /var/imap
chown -R cyrusimap:mail /var/spool/imap
sudo -u cyrusimap /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct -i
sudo -u cyrusimap /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/cyrus-quota -f

This should make it working from scratch. Normally the correct files will be on your systems after the server installation.

Good luck, Kees
