Mail suddenly encrypting addresses

All of a sudden, Mail has started displaying all addresses in the headers of all messages as encypted garbage.

For example john@abc.com looks like FcgbUmpkqcd

This is true for recipients as well as the sender. If I mouse over the address, the little pop-up displays the correct name. If I copy and paste the address it I get the actual address.

I'm using OS 10.3.4; Mail 1.3.8(v618)

Has anyone seen this? Any ideas as to why it's happening?

I think you have File-Vault turned on. Go to System Preferences and select Security. The button there will say Turn File-Vault Off if you do have it on. clicking on it should correct your encryption.

Don't worry, this garbled text is not encrypted.
We have this happen occasionally after we moved (rebuilt) our studio workstations on OSX Panther 10.3. I made the mistake of firing up Mail for the first time (with it's backed up Mailboxes installed) before moving our backed up address book database back into address book (for the mailbox contents to link to). Now, from time to time, we get jumbled text just like you describe. Quitting and relaunching Mail clears it up, but we have not discovered any remedy for it.

Oh, and it has NOTHING to do with FileVault. We don't use FileVault at work, where we occasionally have this issue, and I DO use it at home, and have no problems. It is PURELY a hiccup between Address Book and Apple Mail.
