Mail won't open

Using system OSX (10.2.8). When I try and open mail it just churns away for ever without starting up, if I try and quit it then crashes my machine. Have some other machines of the same spec using the same version of OSX and mail works fine. Any suggestions?
 
Did you repair permissions? Did you restart your system once? (Hehe, sorry for the last one. You never know... ;) )

Yeah tried all that and it still doesn't work. it starts up then i get an error message about mail boxes being locked by (null)?????!! or something - I tried to get the error to come up again but it hasn't appeared since so couldn't copy it properly - and then it freezes. I can still get to all my other apps and browse the finder but mail is locked up, then when i try and force quit it crashes the whole system.
