Major mac troubles

Hi,
When my mac booted up this morning the login window appeared which is strange cos it always auto logs on. Then once i was finally in all my desktop icons, except my HD, were all invisable. When i clicked on them they just disappeared. The same thing happened with some of my apps in the apps folder. To make things worse i have lost all network and most of my programs are refusing to run. With Indesign i get a message saying :

"Adobe InDesign requires at least 5120 Kb of free space on "". "

I downloaded an app called AppleJAck that someone recomended on my pc but when i try mounting the usb stick on the mac, the drive doesnt appear.

Anyone got any ideas?!

BTW : im running Mac OSX 10.3.8

Ok all sorted now! Booted into Single user mode and ran the /sbin/fsck -fy command which sorted all my problems

How often do you repair permissions? You may need to repair the permissions by using the OSX install disk.
 
You Repair Permissions from Disk Utility in the Utility folder, not from the OS CD.

You can do it from either the HD or the boot CD
Even better run it from single user mode w/ applejack, it will repair pref files too.
 
Yes you can, but doing it while booted off the CD won't repair all permissions, that's why Apple says not to repair permissions from the CD.
 
Also make sure that you _do_ have a little more free space on that harddrive, should the InDesign message be _right_ in any way. I recommend _never_ to have less than 2 GB free on a Mac OS X installation. Better more.
