makeshift ways to get better 802.11g signal

my room is only 30 feet away from the wireless (DI 624, 802.11g) router. It's behind a wall that i suspect is blocking my signal strength. I used to get between no signal to 1 bar of signal on the airport signal icon. I purchased a Hawkings hi gain antennae that improved the signal to 1-2 bars. It's improved but i still get dead areas.

Does anyone know what else I can do to improve my signal strength without spending more money or moving the router closer?

Login to the config page of the router. (192.168.0.1, and the whole bit). Go to Advanced -> Performance. On the Performance page, make sure that the Preamble Type is set to Long. You could also try some things like changing the channel to 1 or 11 (Home -> Wireless). It's also best to go to the support page (http://support.dlink.com) because I'm sure there's new firmware upgrades available that will enhance the performance of the router. If you do have the latest firmware, make sure Super G Mode is disabled. That only works with Dlink proprietary network cards.

Should've got a Linksys. :)

Airport extreme is absolutey awful when it comes to range. I just bought a netgear mr814 wireless router for 1/3 the cost of AEBS and get 3 bars in my menubar when my airport gave me no signal.

i got the Dlink b/c it costs $70-80 with rebate; and it comes with a 24/7 tech support for ***3 years*** i've got one at the office and one at home in houston and it works pretty well. at home, the router is 60+ feet away from my bedroom and I get 2-3 bars of reception. not bad. unfortunately, this place i'm staying in LA tends to block all sorts of signals including my cell phones.

I use a linksys AP and have to say the quality of signal to my mac is awesome. They are opposite ends of the house, and the signal never drops. Wish I could say the same for my laptop, it has a onirico pcmcia adapter and the signal is very weak. :(
