Making OSX Icons

I've read a couple of articles on how to make icons for OSX. I've made a few, but for some reason even with a transparent background in photoshop I still get a white square background mask around the icon. Is there anyway to get rid of this? I've tried searching the net and haven't found anything that addresses this.

I have the same problem. It seems impossible to make a transparent icon in X. Is there a way to do it without buying tons of icon software?

Here's a shareware program for making OSX icons:Iconographer
You can create transparency with alpha masks. If you don't understand it from the software I can explain it. (just not right now):)

Yes, Iconographer is the best Icon editor I've seen. It even does Windows icons.

I suggest it 100%!

It's the best! I've used it to make all my icons on my Desktop. My Home Folders, my Trash Can, my Hard Drives... And soon just about all of OS X's default icons.
