Menu bar icons

How is the order of the menu bar icons chosen by OS X? I notice that they are always in the same order. And I heard that command+dragging them will change the order. That doesn't work for me. Nothing happens.

If you want to have a lot of fun download the developers kit (or you might have the cd with your X disk). You would need some training to build any programs but one tool on there in /Developer/Applications is called interface builder. The developer has control about what the menu bar looks like but the first 2 or 3 are either un changable or there are strict guidelines from apple about not moving them. You almost always see Applacation File Edit in a row and you can't move them as far as I know.

You can drag some, but not all applications. basically, if the application is a menuling, then you can drag it around. You should be able to drag around the menulings from apple (volume, monitor resolution, clock) and some other third party menulings like ASM and Classic Spy.

However, a lot of third party apps that use menu icons are not menulings. Hopefully that will change in the future.

Ah, I see. Yeah, all of them are 3rd party apps. :)

Thanks.
