Recently it seems that every time I reboot the system (usually after a software update), Spotlight does not work. The search box pops up, but no answers are displayed for anything that is typed. If I examine the root folder, I find that there is a .metadata_never_index file there; if I remove it and reboot then Spotlight starts working again!
That file is present on other volumes, but that is fine because I do not want them indexed.
But what is creating this file on the root volume after most reboots?
