microphone

try (sounds stupid, i know) turning the volume up on the microphone in sys prefs.

for some reason it deafults at all the way down.....

1) What kind of mac do you have (iMac G5, iBook, Super colorful iMac G3?)
2) Are you just trying to use your mic to talk to some one (because you need an application to do it with)
3) are you trying to use iChat? a better solution might be skype which is available on windows, Linux and OS X and is built for talking to other people via mic

thanks jet, but will this let me use the microphone on my computer? i have a
MAC OS X version 10.3.9......and i want to be able to talk to people in chat.
we have a club and we thought it would be fun to talk on the computer using
the microphones. so if anyone has used it and could explaine that would be great.
.....thanks cleo

I understand you are running OS X. But if you tell me what type of computer you have (iMac, iBook, Powermac, or Powerbook) i can understand your situation so that you can find and use the built in mic

or, did you buy a mic that plugs in to your computer?

please describe your situation in more detail for me

As quick as I can...

If you have a mic already, you and your friends can use Skype. It works on Mac and Windows and has pretty amazing sound quality. I use it to chat with family in Canada. No problems.

If you have a mic but don't know where to put it, perhaps you have a Mac Mini. I have one. The Mini comes without a mic jack. If this is your situation, you can get a USB sound adapter. I use one. It is not terribly good, but it gets the job done.

Like Jet said, it would be helpful to know your set-up, which computer you have.

Basically though, to voice chat with another computer, both computers have to be connected (as through the internet) and running programs with compatible protocols. Unless you have an iSight, your best cross-platform program to use is SKYPE - a freeware package that runs on MacOsX, Linux and Windows boxes.

Once you have the connection, using the mic is as simple as talking to your Mac (that is if the mic is built in, like JetwingX says). You can control the gain (volume) in the Sound System Preference. The mini has no built in mic, but the rest of the consumer Macs (and the powerbooks) do. The mini requires a USB solution, like the Griffin iMic.

thanks guys.......i have an ............imac it sounds confusing to use the mic, and i
think it has an built in mic?....i hope i am makine sense?......well thanks again;

cleo

yes, it does have a built in mic - it should have a small little hole above the screen, in the casing as it curves towards the top. this is the microphone.

i can't really help much more than this, as i have never got the microphone working on my pMac

It really couldn't be simpler with the machine you have. Start a program that uses the mic - talk into it. It really is that easy.

To make sure the mic is working, open the sound prefpane, click on input and select internal microphone. Move the slider to the middle and talk. You should see flashing of the bars in input level.

If that is happening, the next step is to get the program running. To help with that, need to know what program you are using. Cross-platform chat is easiest with Skype. But more input from you is necessary. What is it that isn't working?

hi pds........what i am trying to do is chat with someone from my computer to the
other. we have no program, we are in a chat room and instead of typing to chat
we would like to try to talking thru the computers microphone. now do i have to
be in something like yahoo or something?......the other person has a different
computer........i am a new computer person so this is all new to me.......thanks
.............cleo

To chat from one computer to another, you have to have a program. If you are in a chat room, that room is a program. The best solution for crossplatform (mac to pc) voice chat is for both parties d/l skype at from here and create usernames. Once you have a user name, and know your friends user name, you can call him/her and talk.

If both have macs, you can use iChat, but crossplatform, skype is the way to go
