Acctually, MS has offered FIVE MILLION DOLLARS reward for this.

Microsoft Announces Creation of $5 Million Reward Program to Fight Illegal Computer Viruses
WASHINGTON Nov. 5 — Microsoft Corp. is creating a $5 million reward program to help law enforcement identify and convict those who illegally release worms, viruses and other types of malicious programs on the Internet.

Microsoft said Wednesday the first two rewards it will offer will be for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the spread of the MSBlast.A worm and the SoBig virus unleashed earlier this year.

The company offered $250,000 rewards for each.

Those two malicious programs attacked computers that ran Microsoft's Windows operating system and caused widespread problems for companies and home users earlier this year.

Microsoft executives made the announcement, flanked by representatives of the FBI, Secret Service and Interpol international police agency. Residents of any country are eligible for the rewards, officials said.

"The malicious distribution of worms and viruses ... are far from victimless crimes," said Keith Lourdeau, acting deputy assistant director of the FBI Cyber Division. He noted that Internet attacks have cost businesses and home users millions of dollars, with some estimates putting it into the billions.

Microsoft's software has been the target of the most serious Internet attacks over the last two years, and company founder Bill Gates has announced a "trustworthy computing" initiative to focus on improving the security of all of Microsoft's products.

M$ must be really desperate. A major software company is offering a reward for making a security nightmare. I am not a software programmer, wouldn't be wise to spend that money on development. Moreover, (not that I care), aren't they worried about their image. Having to offer $ to solve their OS security flaws. Embarrassing.

I don't think so.

It appears to me that this is a threat to any would-be virus/worm/trojan writers that Microsoft is serious about them, and that they will track him down.

Basic psychology tells us that the person(s) enjoy the challenge. Second, what is the threat? Jail, penalties?

Aww, you guys ruined it! I was going to turn myself in and collect the money after I served my time. ;)

I don't think this is a matter of putting up a bounty to solve a security issue. Rather, it is putting up a bounty for criminals who committed something illegal, which happened to involve f*cking with Windows.

or how about this as a concept for you all:

USE THE DAMN MONEY TO FIX WINDOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a ploy to be able to draw on some people's natural sympathy for the victim. It made me sick, the guy on TV was almost crying, "he broke my software!!"

Unfortunately, people will fall for it. Too many people believe that all OSes are as insecure as winblows, just that winblows is bigger, so we hear about their trouble.

Give me a break!
