This is nothing new, really...
I remember a toy in the 80s that allowed you to do this. It was a wand-like device that you would wave back and forth to display text messages like those on said phones.
My coworker also has a clock that has a set of LEDs that spin and display the time and date in motion, as well as Caller ID when hooked up to a phone line.
