midi/garage band

I recently bought a midi interface that I want to work with garage band to be used with my guitar/pedal. I installed the driver, and garage band recognizes the device, but the sound coming in is just static. I am going to try a different pedal, but other than that i don't know what to look for. any suggestions?

Sounds like you're getting confused on the issue. The MIDI format is DIGITAL, and the device is recognised as actual digital information about what notes is played on what instrument and with what properties.
A guitar pedal would create an effect on ANALOG audio, which is NOT digital. If you were to use a guitar pedal you'd actually need to feed it an ANALOG audio signal (such as from the audio out of an electric guitar or keyboard) and then pass this to an ANALOG audio input of your Mac.

What specific devices have you got hooked up, and how have you connected them?

the guitar is going into a boss gt-3 pedal that has midi in/out. then I have an interface going from the pedal (midi cables) to my usb. My friend had a nearly identical setup and it worked fine.
