midi playback problems in Garageband

Hi, I've been having problems with my midi playback skipping and crackling in Garageband. I have a MacBook Pro with 4 gigs of RAM and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, so I thought it was pretty strange I'd be having this problem. Even with only one track of midi, noticeable skipping and popping occurred. This problem started happening about a week and a half ago, right around the time I installed a few updates from Apple. I am still running Tiger (so that I can use Digidesign's Pro Tools program for audio recording, it is not currently compatible with Leopard), and that made me wonder if the updates had something to do with my problems. (Also, just so you know, I don't use any external midi devices, all of my audio/midi work I do in Garageband uses only what's built in to the Macbook Pro).

So, I called Applecare and they had me reinstall Garageband, but that didn't help. I decided to go to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store, and they came to the conclusion that an archive and install would be the best way to repair the problem, as it seemed like one of the updates must have been the problem. We did this, and everything seemed fine. We decided that it would be a good idea for me NOT to install any updates for Garageband or Quicktime after the archive and install. This seemed to make sense since the recent updates I had installed included a Quicktime update, and that was the only program I updated that handles midi. Anyway, the archive and install worked, the midi files played nice and smoothly, even 5 or 6 tracks played without the slightest glitch or pop.

So, after the archive and install I went home and decided to go online to check email. Safari wouldn't launch, its icon just sat in the dock mid-bounce. I checked Software Update and there were a few updates, including one for Airport Extreme and one for Safari. I updated those, again avoiding updates for Garageband and Quicktime.

After that, Safari worked great. After checking my email, I decided to check Garageband again. Now, it was back to the old clicks and pops, skips everywhere even on one track of midi. I decided to see if it had something to do with Airport, so I turned Airport off, and viola, smooth midi playback returned. So, now I can use Garageband for midi playback, but only without Airport on.

So, what I want to know is, why in the heck does Airport effect my midi playback in Garageband?
