Migration Assistant on new iMac

I am going to be getting a new Intel iMac and want to transfer everything over from the eMac. Migration assistant will bring all the apps and registrations and prefs over intact, correct? I get lost when things don't go smooth. I would like it if all my tunes and pictures were ready to use when I am finished. I can then clean up the new computer when I am ready. I am giving the eMac to my son for his new restaurant, so I want to trash stuff that he won't need, although our musical tastes are interestingly similar.

My office has been steadily upgrading computers for many of our users, and I've been relying on Migration Assistant to make it simple.

One thing to keep in mind is that it only brings over things in the Applications & User folder. All documents stored at root level will not copy over.

Apart from that, yes. Migration Assistant is the best way I know to translpant your user onto a fresh system while maintaining prefs & apps.

Be smart, though. Backup important data first. Never trust that your computer will work 100% of the time.

Update. I got my new iMac and tried Migration Assistant. I was unable to restart the new iMac. I could log in and shut down. Went to the help line and they tried everything, and the fan started running full blast all the time. I am getting a new iMac today, but I think I will take the time to drag what I want off the old machine using target disk mode. It shouldn't be this complicated.

Here's how I've been doing it with success.

Go through the registration as normal at initial boot up. This will give you a working blank admin account. From there, run Migration Assistant (Application/Utilities) to add your old account as a second account. Then you can set Login Options (in Accounts tab of System Prefs) to log in as you automatically.

As for the other account that now lives on your new Mac, it's recommended you keep a default admin account on your system for testing problems that may arise.

Update.
The only thing that the eMac doesn't do is restart for some reason. I ran DW, zap PRAM, Permissions, everything. I tried migrating from the eMac to the new iMac last night, and everything came over properly, but now the iMac won't restart. I guess I will have to live with it. I tried logging out and clicking the restart from that window, and that didn't work either. I can shut down and log in, but I can't restart.
Thanks for all the help, but I don't think there is much more I can do.
