Minimum System Fonts?

Anyone know the absolute minimum fonts required for OS X? I have figured out the hard way that LucidaGrande is the main display font, but I wasn't sure if technically I need any other font for dialog windows or other less used displays.

My plan is to remove all the dFonts as they are unusable from a print production standpoint (someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I cannot find a service provider that can use the damn things). I also want to move all non-critical fonts to a consolidated location for Suitcase to activate if needed instead of spread all over the damn place in OS X's default locations.

send those system fonts (particularly in OSX) to a print bureau.

As for the bare minimum, I used to ditch everything except Arial, Helvetica, Courier and Times. These are the ones in the Library/Fonts folder (and subsidiary User font folders).

FYI--I am running mostly OK with ONLY LucidaGrande.

I emptied out all three main font folders (had to use BatchMod to reset permissions for system fonts) and left only LucidaGrande.

I also had to remember to emtpy OS 9's fonts (left a few like Chicago, Courier, Geneva for kicks and core functionality).

So far I have one remaining problem. TextEdit won't launch now. Anyone know which font(s) are required for TextEdit?

I got rid of Lucida Grande!

Everything works fine. Sure you haven't set Lucida as the system font with TinkerTool?

I have never used Tinker Tool. A few weeks ago when I was goofing around trying to eliminate fonts, I lost all screen displays of fonts when I removed LucidaGrande, so I put it back. Maybe it was the result of something else I did. Maybe I don't in fact need LG either, but for now, I'm leaving it due to the pain I wne thru before (ever try navigating windows when you can't read a single word, cuz they no longer exist?).

my fault, you're taking them from System/Library/Fonts, I thought you where taking them from Library/Fonts!

Yes, I can now see why, leave it der den!!!

Was that the only font you had to leave?

I'm interested now, in doing the same.

LG is the ONLY font I have in the following locations:

Root/Users/Home/Library/Fonts
Root/Library/Fonts
Root/System/Library/Fonts

All other fonts are managed thru Suitcase and are all organized by type/style etc. such as:

OpenType
Alternative (OT)
Script (OT)
Sans Serif (OT)
Serif (OT)
Display (OT)
CAPS (OT)

TrueType
Alternative (TT)
Display (TT)
CAPS (TT)
Serif (TT)
Script (TT)
Sans Serif (TT)

Type 1
Serif (T1)
Script (T1)
Sans Serif (T1)
Display (T1)
CAPS (T1)
Alternative (T1)

That's just my method, seems to work OK for me.

TextEdit also uses Monaco 10 point for plain text documents. Just go to /var/log/ and drag ftp.log or system.log to TextEdit and you'll see. After you do this, those documents cannot have different fonts placed through the file, it just beeps.
