Mobile user

I have a server and a laptop on my network. I created a new user ABC on the server, no such local user on the laptop. On the laptop I logged in as ABC - all OK.

I created a user XYZ on the laptop. Then I created user XYZ on the server. After it was working, I followed directions to make XYZ a "mobile" account, to sync on first login, etc.

Rubbing my hands with anticipation, I logged in as XYZ on the laptop and ... nothing! I was logged in locally, as before, with no connection to the server.

Did I miss a step or two?

Do the accounts have the same password? The first search node for authentication is always the local netinfo, so if authentication can be resolved by that node, it won't look for the network directory services, such as Open Directory.

You shouldn't have to actually create the local account. All you should have to do is login with the server credentials and select to create the mobile account.

Thanks. I'll try it. What I want to do ultimately is to convert a long established account local to the laptop to a network account.

So, what you'll want to do is move the home directory from the local machine to the server to serve it. In Workgroup manager make sure that the home directory location is pointing to the area on the server with the proper username, etc on the folder. Make sure you have proper permissions since the UIDs may not match then.

I really meant convert to a mobile network account. See my recent post in thread "Users homedirs and AFP". I think NetInfo is the culprit.
