any advice?
thanks

MacMan, i have a simmilar problem with the machine not properly disconnecting from the net if the call drops out. I dont know about noise on the line, as it's purely a data line. Have you configured your mac's ethernet port (if you have one) and if so, did you have any issues with it?

Be nice if everyone that posted here asking for help with something, would also post their machine specs. Would make it easier to help out.

Mac Model
Amount of Ram
Operating System
Peripherals

ok bob. But what's the point of spending ages putting all the information possibly needed into a post, when people don't even bother to say "sorry, can't help ya" after SPECIFICALLY requesting more info.

ok are there the specs you wanted?

Machine Model: iMac
CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (83.0)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 350 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 320 MB
Bus Speed: 100 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.19f1
Serial Number: SG00400EHTK

More information than needed and not enough information. The point of telling us what model and what OS is so we can give you directions on how to possibly correct it. OS X is different from OS 9 different from 8.x, etc. when troubleshooting. And if we know your OS, then we only type in one set of instructions. Saves everyone time.

You could put your specs in your signature, then you won't have to type it every time. And we won't have to ask.

And the point is that some one will know the answer.

Okay, try this:
Go to the home folder>library>preferences. Locate and trash the com.apple.internetconnect.plist file.

Close the windows, empty the trash, give it a test run.
After logging off, pick up your phone and see if you hear the strange noises or a dial tone.

That will delete some. Open the Internet Connect and take a screen shot, or write down your settings so you'll be able to enter them again if needed..

No need to make a post like this.

Yes there is bob. I have posted questions on several occassions. Someone asks for more info. So i give them more info. And all of a sudden, no one has any answers. Im not saying they should have all the answers. Im simply saying it would be nice to at least have them say "sorry. i can't help you" when they have previously asked for more info, giving the impression that they can help.

I have had this problem before (am on 10.2.6), but it seemed to go away on its own after a while, and was using a very very long extension cable to connect, so may be drop outs/distortion as someone said. Only advice I can give you is that it seems to resolve itself a bit faster if you unplug the phone cable from the computer.

ps- i've been suggesting this site to other mac users i know because people are on the whole so friendly and helpful- so play nice kiddies! (No specific judgment on anyone) Part of the reason i love being a mac user so much is that the people are such a good bunch- so save your anger for making amusing anti-microsoft spoofs! Is much more constructive!

It seems i'm also having problems with my telephone line. it's been plagued with problems since it was put in.

I can't wait to move out (now i'm working) into a place that is broadband-friendly. :D

MacMan,
Write down all your internet info - access number, email info... all of it. You should have it written down in case of an emergency situation. Naturally, keep it in a safe place where you remember where you put it and no one else will stumble upon it.
Then you will be prepared to enter in the info needed.

Pengu,
Broadband and DSL has its quirky problems too. It took my ISP almost a year to get things properly connected.

Some helpful hints:
Make sure you are using the shortest phone cable possible connecting your computer modem to the phone jack.
Check the phone jack with a phone... do you get static? Then you need to get that phone line fixed. It could be bad wiring, a bad jack, or a bad connection to the building.
Are you using a phone jack splitter? Then you may need to replace it. Those do go bad.

Cheryl,
Thanks for the tips, but i've learnt all of this the hard way all ready. My 2nd phone line IS shagged (worse than a sheep at a New Zealand bucks night!), but the problems I was having with the modem didnt seem to be caused by the line (it seemed to be ok at the time). As for the cable. I've recently changed it to a brand new cable. I found out a few months back that modem cables are usually better quality than standard "phone" cables. I went looking for my original modem cable that came with the machine (i had been using a longer one to reach the wall-jack) and found 3 of the four wires cut/severed because one of my brothers dogs had chewed on it. Anywho.

As for the broadband quality thing. I know that anything is just as likely to have its problems, but in australia, ALL cabling of this sort (public telecomms) is done by Telstra. And basically, for those of us not right in the middle of a city (i'm about 7 kms outside a town of about 20,000 ppl.) there is no chance of anything better than dialup. and if you want a second line for internet, it will probably be cut down to 28.8k because they use a pair gains system. (basically, instead of getting a new line, they effectively cut the old one in half.). Anyways. point is. most of the exchanges/lines with ADSL access have been upgraded/maintained for that service, and a few places actually have cable (this isn't very popular here, so speeds would be quite good still).

As for a jack splitter. no. this line is purely a data line. (or the occassional phone call when i really need to and someone is using the house-line.

MacMan,
It wouldn't hurt. You would just need to entrer in your info in the Internet Panel - that holds your default settings on email program choice, browser choice, etc.
