modem on hold question

I've been seeking an answer to this on and off for some time. Basically it has to do with ancient technology, dial up modems, which at the moment I'm stuck with.

I have two up-to-date MAC's that use dial up modems and have software to deal with incoming calls while connected. (I also have the requisite caller ID and call waiting with the phone service.) That all works pretty well: if someone tries to call in while I'm connected, a window is displayed showing the person's name and number -- and gives me the option of answering or ignoring the call. If I answer the call, I can talk for a couple minutes without breaking the internet connection.

Seems ideal, but the problem is that the message is volatile -- if I'm away from the computer for a few minutes (or asleep during a long download), I will have no idea that someone tried to call in. So I'm looking for either:

• A log that the OS might be keeping of incoming calls while connected, or

• A trigger that occurs when an incoming call is detected that could be used to run an applescript that logs the time of the attempted call (and, ideally, also the caller ID info).

I've looked at available software for phone management. While it all starts out looking promising, it also all seems to be totally befuddled by the modem on hold business.

Anybody have any ideas on this?
