Monitor concerns

My LaCie Electron Blue III 19" monitor has been acting weird lately. I have it hooked up to my 733 with the original nvidia card running Jaguar.

Everyonce in a while, the upper left corner dims and the colors become ruddy in about a 3" square area.

My question is whether anyone thinks this might be either:

-Monitor getting flakey

-Video card getting flakey or

-Power fluctuation in my underwired apartment

It all started recently so I'm hoping to be prepared if something a lot worse happens.

Any ideas?

On a similar but completely unrelated note I think my monitor is on it's way out. It seems to automaticaly degaus... I guess that's what it is, at regular intervals throughout the day (every 5 or 6 hours)

That isn't quite normal is it?

I'm with plastic on the first problem. I would assume magnetic interference at first.

Auto degauss? OMG, you better not let any RAM or other electronic equipment near the monitor. Congrats, other than your G4 being listed as a weapon by Pentagon, your monitor is now officially a primitive Electro Magnetic Pulse weapon (EMP).

Sorry, I got carried away... but the PCB board is getting fried. I had that problem before, and to fix it would cost a fair bit of money, and taking into consideration the other parts that are failing, I decided to trade it in for a newer monitor screen.

In another cheeky words, when a piece of gear is becoming Microsoft OS, no point patching it. It is due for a change. I always get away with that with my ex-girlfriend and get to buy new gears... until she wonders why all my gears need changing every six to twelve months...

me answer "I am a heavy user"... LOL... she bought it too... no wonder we are no longer together... she became wiser.

Ahh, I see. Thanks. I've been holding out on buying anything new for a while. I got this studio display right after they came out a couple of years ago. Since it matches my G3 I didn't want to replace one and not the other. Hopefully it'll last until January when I buy a new machine.

LOL Plastic, I have the same problem! :D
(not with the ex tho, and currently no gf so no greif ;))

Rhino_G3, CRT Monitors have an average lifespan of a couple of years (3? 4? 5 max I think), so for me it's no suprize when they start acting up after a while.

I got lucky when my ex-boss was throwing away a 19" CRT because of the same symptoms (and misalignment), luckily it was still under warantee so I called up Compaq/HP and got it replaced! :)

Now I feel my 17" Apple Studio CRT Display is too small... but the darn thing won't quit! It has a small scratch on the screen itself and a lose ADC Connector, no reason to replace it yet! (not that I can afford to buy a new monitor right now) heh :p

you realise that what was the problems with systems before 9600 came out? Damn Apple system just won't quit! Might a new battery and some simple repairs, but they are built like tanks.

My 6100 is still used in studio 2 as a MIDI workstation. beat that.

Hey plastic and rhino! Thanks for your input.

The only thing near my monitor is a window about two feet away. I'm on the top floor, and there is nothing outside my windows. My tower is on the other side about the same distance away.

I did notice last night after I posted that it happenes when the power in my apartment wanes. They also (now that I'm thinking about) installed an exterial MRI device at the hospital across the street. The Device is in its own trailer approximately 100 yds away, but not in a straight line to my window.

As I really watched and waited for it to happen again (maybe one every 5-8 hours) it does seem to effect quite a bit of the screen, but it originates in the same upper left corner I mentioned before.

Does that help giving you any more information?

That is very strange. The MRI machine COULD be causing it but I would believe it to be very unlikely.

If it is when your appt. seems to be loosing power it could very well be that the monitor is barely recieving the voltage it needs to sustain a picture. Now that you mention it I have seen my monitor do something simmilar when the power was flickering because of a storm. The only fix for that, that I can think of, would be a backup power supply.

I've been looking into an LCD for my next monitor but I do have a few concerns with them. What is the average lifespan of an LCD display? I always thought that they had a lower lifespan and were more easily damaged than a CRT based display.

There are also two things keeping me from buying an LCD.
1.) Native resolutions - I like having my options in what my desktop resolution is running at (right now 1600 x 1200) I haven't seen a 17" LCD that'll display that size yet.
2.) Viewable positions - In my experience you have to be setting right in front of an LCD, at the correct angle, to get a good picture. Although it has been a few years since I looked at LCD's. Have they made any headway in that area yet?

Well, I guess that could be part of my problem. I've been running it at that resolution ever since I brought it home. I guess it's had a pretty hard life. On nearly 24x7 running that resolution for the past 4 years :D
