Monitor power questions

I have two questions about LCDs:

1. Is it true that it's a fire hazard to plug them into power strips (as opposed to directly into the wall)? I've seen that written in several manuals from several different brands (Sony and Princeton, and I think Xerox, too), but it seems ridiculous to me not to plug my computer equipment into a surge protector. Are these companies just saying this as a cover-our-butts measure?

2. Is it safe to turn on and off my monitor while my computer is on? I do it often enough with no problems, but again, I hear warnings against it. My monitor is hooked up through DVI, if that matters.

I think the power strip thing is is just some legal CYA on their part. The problem is that people put too many things on the power strip and then overload the wires in the wall. If your depression era bungalow bursts into flame they don't wanna get sued.

I haven't heard about the other thing myself so I cannot help there.

my two lcds are both on powerstrips. in fact they're both on one that is attatched to another one.

they're also powerstrips that cost me £1 each....

is that dangerous?

I would not worry about it. In a modern building where the wiring is up to code you will trip the breaker before anything bad happens. Problems still can occur in some commercial environments where they are wired to support 100s of workstations on a single circuit. If you were to plug all of those things into a single outlet via power strips plugged into power strips there might be too much for one to take and it might be a problem. That said they generally have a built in fuze or breaker to prevent fires even in that extreme case.

I think it really is all about product liability. If they say that they can wash their hands of any responsibility when something goes wrong.

all i know is that i do both of those things, and have never had any problems. so i'd just ignore it and carry on.
