Monitor Question

This might be the wrong spot for this but here it goes.

I'm a photo student and currently have a iMac:

Machine Model: iMac
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 100 MHz

GeForce2 MX:

Type: display
Bus: AGP
Display Type: LCD
VRAM (Total): 32 MB
Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0110
Revision ID: 0x00b2
ROM Revision: 1057.008.4

Now my question is this, I have the 15" version and the small space is killing me. If I buy a 19"+ monitor and connect it to this iMac am I still limited to the 1024x768 display limit or can I increase the size on the new monitor.

Thanks

Justin

So after reading nVidias tech specs, the mac version of the card is capable of 2048x1536 @ 75hz. I assume apple limits the resolution right now because the LCD display can only handle 1024x768, so I guess before I buy a monitor I need to know if I buy one capable of a higher resolution will OSX let me adjust it higher?

Thanks

Justin

Actually this is what Apple does with the iMac and iBook macs. The graphic card is capable for higher resolutions, but it is locked beyond resolutions higher than the native screen-res by the firmware. However, I know of hacks that do unlock the resolution-limitation for the iBook. So, maybe there is something for the iMac as well..

Ha, found the hack! Check: http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/editors/2004/10/imacscreenspanning/index.php
you will find a link to rutemoeller.com where you can download the hack.
Good luck!
