On occation when waking my mac after it goes to sleep and the monitor shuts off, the cpu wakes up but the monitor does not come on. I can hear the the monitor turn (brief buzz sound) on but the screen remains absolutely black as if the electron gun isn't firing... which it isn't. To get the monitor to turn on I force the computer to sleep again (pressing the sleep button), then wake it and usually the monitor comes back to life. Eventually, that doesn't work anymore and I have to shut the computer down and reset the PRAM (wait for 5 chimes). That usually fixes the problem. On rarer occations that doesn't work and I have to unplug everything and wait. Then the monitor works again.
My hardware: dual 500MHz G4, 1.5Gb RAM, 17" Studio Display (CRT), OS X 10.3.9
The problem is completely independent of what OS is installed as this has been an issue for as long as I've owned the thing (came preinstalled with 9.1 when new).
The odd thing is that I had the same exact problem with my Powermac 8600. The problem was never resolved.
My workaround for both computers: keep the monitor from shutting off during sleep... just use a screensaver.
Hopefully you have an answer!
Thank you very much!
Regards,
Jacob
