More about iMac Drive troubles.

Okay, more about my iMac iLemon!
My little brother put two CDs in the drive again (okay, okay, I'm fixing this problem). Problem is: my Mom pulled them out with tweezers, and I think she broke the drive or knocked it out of sync in doing so. I need to know if there is something I can do to 'reset' the drive, or whether it is a gonner.
If it is fried, then we will get an external CD-ROM drive, not try to replace the internal one, so does anyone have any cheap recommendations?

I replaced a Slot loading CD drive on an iMac. A three year old thought a key belonged in there. And of course the parents were probably the ones who broke it trying to get the key out.
In any case, while I had to take apart almost the entire machine, it is pretty easy to replace.

Did you try a cd? Can you explain what is messed up with it? Is it a tray or slot loading?

Oh sorry! I forgot to write in what was happening!
Anyway, it is a 1999 iMac DV SE (the first model which was colored Graphite) and it has a slot-loading DVD drive.
What happens is this: when the iMac is turned on, the drive grinds for about five seconds, like it is trying to eject a CD. Later if I try to insert a CD the drive doesn't respond at all. (Doesn't try to suck it in or anything)
It shows up in System Profiler though.
Also, if I push the manual eject button, then it grinds again, but nothing else happens.
