mouse doesn't function with keyboard

just bought an emac with osx10.1.4. I plugged the mouse to the keyboard and the keyboard to the usb port and everything worked as usual.
I put it in sleep mode and when it "woke up" the mouse cursor was frozen but the keyboad was still working. I forced a restart by holding down the power button. Os x booted, but the mouse cursor was still frozen. Then the screen filled with kernel error/unix code, and I restarted again. Anyhow, I can't get the mouse to function when it's attached to the keyboard and it's using up a valuable usb port. The usb ports on the keyboard appear to work (an isub functions on both ports). I've tried unplugging all peripherals except the keyboard and mouse to no avail. Any insight?

I've seen the mouse problem while waking from sleep with 10.1 before. Usually all I needed to to was unplug the mouse and/or mouse-keyboard combination and plug it back in again to cure the problem. Usually I could just plug it back into the same port but every now and then I had to use a different port.

I've seen the frozen-cursor problem happen if I try to move the mouse before the computer has totally woke from sleep. Waiting a beat before moving the mouse after waking seemed to prevent the problem from occurring.
